Over
the last 29 years JPAC members have achieved many victories:
- Passage of legislation
that provides prescription drug coverage to low income seniors
(EPIC) - in recognition of JPAC's role, the Governor signed the
bill at JPAC's office; Also fought for and won major expansions
in this program so that it now covers moderate income seniors
as well;
- Creation of the New
York State Patient's Bill of Rights;

- Mandating that wheelchair-friendly
"curb-cuts" be implemented all around the city;
- The establishment
of a specific committee within the City Council to deal with the
concerns of older New Yorkers (Committee on Aging);
- Passage of a New York
State consumer banking law - Lifeline Banking which enables individuals
of any age to afford basic banking services;
- Creation of accessible,
low-cost transportation for disabled individuals and frail seniors
throughout New York City (Access-A-Ride);
- Ensuring the standardization
of supplemental Medicare benefits offered by insurance providers
(Medigap Community Rating);
- Creation of Community
Services for the Elderly (CSE) and Expanded In-home Services for
the Elderly Program (EISEP) which provide much-needed funding
for programs serving older adults in the community;
- Increases to the state
share of SSI;
- Abolishment of mandatory
retirement in the city;
- Legislation limiting
doctor overcharges to Medicare beneficiaries
- Restoration of SSI,
foodstamps and Medicaid benefits for low-income elderly immigrants;
- Facility and staffing
improvements in post offices throughout Brooklyn;
- Improvements in pedestrian
safety in communities by successfully advocating for much-needed
traffic lights, crosswalks and bus shelters;
- Quality of life improvements
in many neighborhoods which include: clean-up of vacant lots,
pick-up of refuse and garbage, anti-crime programs, and closing
of nuisance businesses;
In addition, JPAC members
have been diligent about ensuring consumer rights in the area of
hospitals, nursing homes, banking, funeral services, and home loan
programs. Moreover, members have also taken a keen interest in civic
matters - working hard to register and turn out voters each year
and fighting for reforms in election procedures, the financing of
campaigns and the overall workings of the legislative process.
As part of our intergenerational
project we've organized action campaigns and voter registration
drives on the Hunter College campus; as part of our Action Brigade,
we've demonstrated outside veterinarian's offices throughout the
city for fair pricing on prescription drugs; we have also organized
a number of important community meetings including an intergenerational
"what's at issue in this election" forum, a "Greedy
Geezer" roundtable, and theatrical presentation highlighting
the need for affordable housing.
We encourage you to join
our organizing efforts!
